About Our Charity

The Tallinding Project started when we got involved with the building of a small Nursery School in the area known as Tallinding, a poor area in Serrekunda, The Gambia, West Africa.

The start of the school

We originally got involved in fund raising, but when the original founders dropped out, we made the decision to continue. The Nursery opened in 2004, by which time it was already grossly oversubscribed - 500 children and only 100 places.

Long negotiations took place between us and the Village Elders. The outcome? We agreed to continue as long as the land the school was built on, equivalent to the village green, was ceded to us ‘for the purpose of a school’. Having secured the status of school site, we then continued raising funds and building, a little at a time.

The Growth of the school

We have worked in blocks of 4 classrooms at a time. Originally only building in single storey, but we have later added 2 two storey blocks, boosting the classroom count to 26 by 2018. All the classrooms are also tiled, furnished either with locally made desk units for the Nursery or tables and chairs sent from England in our annual container.

Additionally, we have built 2 toilet blocks (girls and boys) a storeroom, headmaster’s office, a lunch serving and preparing area, and a clinic.

The whole school complex has been enclosed within a 6ft high wall for security, keeping a play and fitness area for the children in the centre of the school buildings.

Running the school

As Tallinding is a poor area, there are many families who cannot afford even the modest school fees. So, to help, we set up a sponsorship scheme in the early years where individuals can support a child to their schooling with uniform and books.

We are extremely grateful to the people who have helped in this way and always have a number of young children needing a sponsor.
